Sophie Quarterman Dressage

Inter 1 level rider offering training from Intro up to Medium

About me

I'm Sophie, a dressage rider, trainer and partner at Knightswood Stud in Cornwall.

I've been competing at dressage since I was 12 and am currently competing at Inter 1 with my top boy Lolly, and starting to take my homebred mare Livvi up through the levels. I train regularly with Michael Beining, whose training focuses on body awareness, mindset and the balance and strength of the horse and rider.

As well as competing my own horses, I also offer training and schooling as well as working on our livery yard day to day! I really enjoy teaching all ages and abilities, and love seeing my clients achieve the goals they have set.

Dressage is an amazing sport, and I want to help more people enjoy it! I strongly believe that both horse and rider will do best when they are relaxed and happy, so I find that a sympathetic approach to training produces the best results.

Competing

Training at Home

One of the best parts of my career is being able to work with a horse and see them progress up through the levels. Lolly came to me as a rising 5 year old and Livvi is a homebred, so it has been incredible to see them grow and change over the years.

Although Lolly and Livvi are at very different stages of their careers, the basis of my training is the same for both of them. Balance, strength and body awareness are key parts of my training — for the horses and myself!

I am fortunate to be able to regularly train with Michael Beining. Michael's teaching is based largely on a mixture of the German Scales of Training, rider mindset and harmony between the horse and rider.

Competitions

I compete both my horses regularly at local venues and further away. Each time we go out, I get to see how our partnerships have progressed since the last competition. Lolly and I have worked our way up from Prelim and are currently competing at Inter 1. We took 3rd place at Pet Plan Area Festival this winter and have our sights set on Nationals in 2020.

Livvi is currently competing at Prelim and is looking very promising, I can't wait to see what this girl has to offer! It was a proud moment for us when she took 2nd in the 4 year old class at Hartpury in 2019.

We have an exciting year planned for 2020, follow us on Facebook to see how we get on!

Training

Both you and your horse will perform best when you are relaxed and happy. I focus training firstly around building a partnership with your horse, and then working through the scales of training.

It's important to me that riders always understand the why behind each movement as well as the how, something that I feel is often overlooked.

The goal of my training is not only to teach you new movements, but also to provide you with a greater understanding of how to work through problems, allowing you to continue to ride confidently at home or at competitions.

Different methods work for different combinations, so I use a wide range of exercises to ensure that the training is best tailored to the needs of you and your horse. We will work not only on your riding, but also building your confidence and setting goals to work towards.

Whether you are working towards medium or simply want to brush up on your flat work, get in touch to see how I can help you achieve your next goal.

|| Back to School (1/2)|| . . So... Lolly and I received our Wild Card for the Winter National Championships for the Inter 1 class at Hartpury in April and I am so proud to have got the invite. Although I would love to go, and nothing beats the buzz of competing, I think this year we need to step back and wait. Recently, I truly have gone back to school to learn all the finer intracacies of Dressage from an absolute genius International Dressage trainer Michael Beining. . Michael and I started our journey together when I was just 12, and he helped me find my gorgeous boy Lolly. After a couple of years, Michael moved to the USA so we lost touch. Fortunately he now resides in Wales and we have found each other again, to finish what we started all those years ago! . I have been working very closely with Michael for the last 6 months, staying away with my horses for weeks at a time, spending every hour absorbing his extensive knowledge of the seat being the 'Entrance to the Horse'. He seriously is like a professor, but was himself trained for 15 years by Willi Schulthesis, a Dressage Master in Germany and his student Rudolf Zeilinger (Olympic coach to the Danish and Spanish teams). So when I was approached by Michael to be coached and work alongside a man with his expertise, the answer had to be YES PLEASE! . I have so much left to learn about the dynamics of working horses with an independent seat, core, hand, leg and mindset. He has taught me to embrace the theory of Dressage as well as the practical riding for a better understanding. Michael is also trained in Sports Psychology and Body Awareness, so I get lots of lectures! 🤣 . 2020 is all about studying and training for Lolly, Livvi and I without the added pressure of Championships slowing the learning process down. Its all starting to click into place, I am still goal setting and very driven, so watch this space to keep up with my training along the way! Sophie has been doing an amazing job with both my daughter and her pony. We have found Sophie to be very professional , friendly and very caring towards our ponies wellbeing. Both daughter and pony get lots from their sessions which have been proven with their ever increasing dressage scores. Highly recommend Sophie and her fabulous facilities.
